What Is Vital Pulp Therapy?

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is a dental procedure aimed at preserving and treating the healthy, living pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels) when it’s been injured or exposed—but not infected or dead.

This procedure is typically common for our younger patients (under 18 years old). It is only recommended when there is no swelling or abscess around the tooth and it is not loose. Under controlled and ideal circumstances, it is a very successful treatment option for young developing teeth.

When is Vital Pulp Therapy Used and what are the benefits?

  • A tooth has deep decay or trauma, but the pulp is still alive (vital).
  • The pulp (nerve) is inflamed, but not infected or necrotic.
  • The goal is to save the tooth’s vitality and avoid or delay a root canal.

Benefits:

  • Preserves the natural tooth and its nerve.
  • Encourages continued root development in young teeth.
  • Less invasive than a full root canal.
  • It can relieve pain and inflammation.
